Verify SendGrid marketing lists before you send
Connect SendGrid with an API key, choose a Marketing Campaigns list, and every contact is verified. The verdict is saved in a custom field, and bad addresses can be added to your global suppression list.
- No export, no re-import
- Catch-all and unknown are free
- Nothing is ever hard-deleted
How the SendGrid integration works
- 1
Connect SendGrid
Paste a SendGrid API key that has Marketing permissions. A send-only key is valid for sending mail but fails on every contacts call, so it will not connect.
- 2
Choose a marketing list
Pick the marketing list you want checked. We pull its addresses and remove duplicates first, so an address listed twice is only verified, and charged, once.
- 3
We verify it in the background
Every address goes through the full check: syntax, domain and MX records, disposable and role detection, and a live conversation with the receiving mail server. The run shows in your Bulk Jobs like any other, so you can close the tab.
- 4
Results land in SendGrid
The verdict is written to a custom field on each contact: pv-good, pv-risky, pv-invalid or pv-unknown. Use it in segment conditions.
What each result means
Every address gets exactly one of these, written to SendGrid as described above.
| Result | Meaning | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| pv-good | The mailbox was confirmed to exist. Safe to send. | 1 |
| pv-risky | A catch-all domain: it accepts every address, so the mailbox could not be confirmed either way. | Free |
| pv-invalid | The mailbox does not exist. Sending here earns a hard bounce. | 1 |
| pv-unknown | No definite answer from the mail server (blocked, greylisted or timed out). | Free |
Cleaning up SendGrid
Remove invalid adds those addresses to SendGrid's global suppression list, which blocks every future send to them from your account. Contacts are not deleted.
Removal is always your choice and never deletes anything. pv-risky and pv-unknown are never removed, because neither proves an address is bad. If a sync fails part way, nothing is written back at all rather than acting on partial results.
Why SendGrid users verify
SendGrid reputation is shared across everything your account sends, transactional mail included. A marketing send to a stale list can raise bounces enough to affect password resets and receipts. Verifying marketing lists first keeps the rest of your email safe.
What it costs
A SendGrid sync costs exactly what verifying those addresses any other way would: 1 credit per definite answer (valid, invalid or disposable). Catch-all, unknown and error results are free, because none of them confirms anything. Credits never expire, and new accounts get free credits to try it, no card needed. See pricing for packs.
SendGrid integration FAQ
Which SendGrid API key permissions are needed?
Marketing permissions, so we can read your lists and contacts and write the custom field. A key restricted to Mail Send will not work.
What does global suppression do?
It stops SendGrid sending anything to those addresses from your account. The contacts themselves remain.
Can I verify addresses before they reach SendGrid?
Yes. Call our REST API at sign-up or use the Zapier app, so bad addresses never enter the list.
